How-To Paint Trim Like a Professional

Painting the trim of your walls takes time and precision to achieve professional results. Ideally, you would paint the trim before it is attached to the wall. In most cases, that is not possible. Continue reading to learn how to paint your home’s interior trim like a professional.

Painting Your Home’s Trim

The Right Tools

The quality of your job often depends on the tools that you use. Before you start, you should have the right materials. This includes;

  • Painter’s tape
  • Angled 2-inch paintbrush
  • Angled, stiff 1-inch paintbrush
  • Paint
  • Sponge or cloth
  • Bucket with water
  • Sandpaper
  • Putty knife
  • Caulk/spackle
  • Drop cloth

The Right Paint

Painting your trim will not look like you want it without finding the right paint first. Don’t rush deciding on the color. It should compliment your walls. Another factor is deciding the type of paint you need. Most painters choose a semi-gloss or satin finish. These are good for interior wood or fiberboard trim. A professional home painter can determine the type of paint that is right for your home.

The Preparation

You must prepare your walls before painting! If you don’t, this almost guarantees achieving poor results. There are a few steps to prepare your walls. First, removed hardened caulking and re-caulk. This will fill in holes or gaps. Then clean the surface of your walls. If you skip cleaning then your walls may have bumps from dust or dirt. The final preparation step is taping your walls. Tape any edged surfaces where you do not want the paint to spread.

Now that you are prepared, you can begin painting! It is important to know the right technique to prevent streaks.

  • Dip the brush until the bristles are almost fully emerged
  • Lightly wipe the brush on the inside of the can to remove excess paint
  • Apply paint in steady, one-way strokes
  • Switch to 1-inch brush for narrow surfaces
  • If applying multiple coats, allow to fully dry and sand
  • Remove tape before paint fully dries
  • Keep windows open until the paint is dry

Painting your trim should be done carefully for the best results. A professional painter can help for guaranteed high-quality results. Contact Mark Powers in Portland, Beaverton, and Tigard to work with expert interior home painters.
